At The Quay we have used a therapeutic approach to our class design.

Therapeutic classrooms are special classrooms designed to support children who need extra help with their social skills alongside their education. They are designed to be calm, supportive environments where children can learn and develop skills. They often have varied styles of seating, calming colours and a clean, neutral aesthetic.

Admissions Information

How do you secure a space at The Quay?
Admission to The Quay is by specialist panel only and the setting is a space for children with Cognition and Learning needs. If you child is about to start school, then your child’s nursery SENCO or the Educational Psychologist will be able to advise you and request the referral to the Portsmouth SEN team. If your child is already at school and needs a transfer to an Inclusion Centre then the school SENCO is who will need to make the referral to the SEN team for you, after an annual review of the EHC Plan has been completed. There is a specified timetable for this, so please ask the SENCO for details in order for the deadlines to be met.

You are welcome to visit The Quay to discuss your child’s needs prior to application, we will also be able to advise you on the process and criteria for entry. The application needs to be made to the SEN Team who will put it forward to the Specialist Placement Panel (or Inclusion Support Panel). If your child meets criteria and a place has been allocated by the SEN team, the Inclusion Centre will contact you directly to arrange a transition meeting or visit, later in the summer term.

What is a Specialist Panel?
Specialist Placement Panels occur twice a year and consider places at most special schools and inclusion centres. The panel is made up from representation from our special schools and specialist provisions, SEN Team and Educational Psychology Service.  After each pupil has been discussed by a panel to determine if they meet criteria for specialist placement, a moderation process starts, which will look to identify pupils with the greater needs. Application to an inclusion centre does not guarantee admission.
