Promoting British Values at St George’s Beneficial CofE

The DfE have reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. At St George’s these values are reinforced regularly.

Since 1753, St George’s has been the school for Portsea children and through our close working relationship with the church, we hold Christian values close to our heart.

We are a community school; we want the best outcomes for those who live and work in Portsea. Over the recent years the constitution of the school has changed remarkably but so has Portsea, Portsmouth and the world.

We have a multicultural school; celebrating similarities and respecting differences. Our children are not prejudiced, they accept all children who come from a variety of different social and cultural backgrounds.

We promote British values through our school curriculum. It is part of our Christian ethos and thus permeates through everything we do.

We:

enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence;
enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England;
encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely;
enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England;
further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures;
encourage respect for other people; and
encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.

Being inclusive our school promotes tolerance, diversity, and respect by actively encouraging students’ participation within the wider community. We celebrate our similarities and respect our differences. We are wholeheartedly dedicated to creating and nurturing the confident, respectful, and civically minded young people our country needs.

At St George’s we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.

Christian Values

As a Church of England school, Christian values underpin our ethos. We want everyone in our school to know that Everything is possible for one who believes’ (Mark 9:23) and our three core values of Courage, Hope and Respect permeate all areas of school life.

Reflection time is an important part of our school life. We re-enforce British Values through our collective worship which is strongly Christian. We have close links with our local church (Harbour St George’s) and the Cathedral, where children experience Christian church services throughout the year.

Throughout our RE curriculum, we promote British Christian values and also educate our pupils about the faiths and beliefs of people from different countries and organisations. We believe that our Christian identity plays an important role in upholding British Values within our school community.
